To promote academe safety among its employees and students, Limay Senior High School (LSHS) held a two-day seminar that emphasized the need for Basic Life Support, Fire safety, and Disaster Preparedness training in the school, Limay Multi-Purpose Hall, March 9 to 10.

“Training not only the school personnel, but most importantly the students…. ‘Pag nagkaroon ng malaking disaster, the local government cannot respond immediately kapag medyo malaki ang nangyari. So kailangan, self-sustaining ika nga dito sa ating community [School], mayroon tayong magagawa. At least for a day, two days, three days. Depende sa tindi ng pinsala.” According to Anthony Bliss, adviser of Student Emergency Respond Group (SERG) of LSHS.

About 24 volunteers from the school attended the seminar which was composed of 10 teachers, 12 students, and two non-teaching personnel to enhance their first aid and disaster response readiness.

Present in the seminar were senior members of SERG, the Local Government Unit, the Bureau of Fire Protection, and the Rescue team of Limay LGU who helped in the discussion and in the training of the volunteers about the safety procedures before, during, and after a disaster.

The first day of the seminar kickstarted at the Limay Multipurpose Hall which focused on the discussions and demonstrations of the speakers.

“More on awareness naman talaga, yun naman talaga yung goal naman din ni Sir Anthon (Anthony Bliss). Yung awareness kasi di naman yan sa isang training lang nakukuha. Dapat yan continuous rin. Para yung skills din is continuous rin ang learning mo.” said Erick R. Laurente, a resource speaker and trainer at the said safety seminar.

The seminar underscored the need for preparation of the school to avoid tremendous casualties whenever the inevitable disaster strikes.

“Kailangan talaga siya, kasi changing na rin ang panahon ngayon. Maraming nang disaster, marami nang nangyayari sa mundo kaya preparation is dapat nandun pa rin. Hindi pa man din nangyayari satin, at least prepared na rin ang school,” Laurente added as he explained the importance of the trainings and seminars such as disaster preparedness.

Furthermore, on the second day of the seminar, the knowledge of the volunteers and their newly learned skills were tested simultaneously as the school conducted a simulation of a multi-hazard situation, an earthquake followed by a fire, on a school-wide basis.

“Napakasaya and exciting kasi nga new-commers and bagong members. Tapos lalong naging exciting yung part na may live fire na nangyari tapos mayroon din namang dalawang emergency na legit yung emergency.” said Marck Niel Magpantay, STEM 12-C, the team leader of SERG, as he expresses his gratefulness towards the drill.

Bliss hopes that the skills and knowledge gained by the volunteers will be used whenever the time comes and a big disaster would happen in the school.

“A lot of factors will play [when disaster hits]. Hopefully mauna ang tinuro, mauna ang pinractice. Sana pag totoo na wag tayo maunahan ng takot, wag mauhan ng panic, kasi di natin magagawa yung ating pinapractice…. Let us go back kung ano ang tinuro. Kung pano tayo tinrain. Yung purpose kung bakit tayo nag-train.” Bliss said as he seeks application by the volunteers of its learnings from the training should an emergency hit the school.
