CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, PAMPANGA--------To beef up its thrust to go electronic journalism, THE HARBINGER, Limay Senior High School's official student publication, attended the 5th Extramural of the School Paper Advisers Movement, Incorporated (SPAM, Inc.) that carries the theme ""Journalism in the Era of Generation C," Hotel Gracelane, January 19.

SPAM invited speakers from ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs' "'Bayan Mo, Ipatrol Mo" (BMIM) to spearhead the discussion on media and information literacy, responsible social media engagement, fact checking and paperless journalism.

Dabet Castañeda-Panelo, Campaign and Training Officer of ABS-CBN Bayan Mo Ipatrol Mo and president of the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP), centered her discussion of "News Literacy in the Age of Social Media," through highlighting the acronym "V.I.A." that stands for "Verification, Independence and Accountability."

Castañeda-Panelo also walked the attendees through the various forms of "fake news" spreading in many social media sites and ways to detect disinformation.

Former ABS-CBN News reporter and now the chief aggregator of ABS-CBN BMIM Kori Quintos dispensed to the audience the 7 promises of responsible social media engagement (7 panata ng responsableng paggamit ng social media) to guide the users in dealing with the said internet platform.

Professor Ben Domingo Jr., Commission on Higher Education's committee chair on campus journalism, encouraged the participants to turn to paperless journalism by emphasizing the immediacy of the stories to be published in this platform, its cost-effectiveness as compare to the pricey printing cost of the paper-based journalism, and the vast reach of social media engagement that it can do.

For two years, The Harbinger has been practicing campus journalism online through its Facebook account and its website https://theharbingerlimay.wixsite.com/theharbinger-limaysh.

The said media conference was attended by school paper advisers and student journalists from Angeles University Foundation, Philippine Military Academy, University of the East, and University of San Carlos (Cebu) to name a few.
